Hi, I'm Renee Thornton,
co-owner of Smoothie Whirl'd.
On January 8, 2015, I was diagnosed with
Stage 3 Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma.
The tumor was wrapped around my Spleen.
Once the tumor and my spleen were
removed, I was told that this particular
cancer was fairly aggressive and a very
strong chemotherapy treatment was the
only answer.
Four weeks after major surgery, I started chemo.
Unfortunately, I ended up in the 15% of patients who
react most negatively to the chemo and the other
medications that go along with the treatment.
After six months of very difficult chemotherapy, I am
now in remission. I feel blessed to be alive.
I know we can together
find cures and better medicines that have less side
effects for those who come after us. I never want anyone
to go through what I did. I would be honored to have
your support at the walk or as part of our team of
donors and fundraisers.
Approximately every
3 minutes one person in the United States is
diagnosed with a blood cancer.
Approximately every
10 minutes, someone in the US dies from a blood
cancer.
An estimated
1,185,053 people in the US are either living with,
or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or
myeloma.
We are living in an
extraordinary moment. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)
is on the brink of incredible breakthroughs that have
already begun to change the lives of thousands of
patients; treatments that can manage a person's
condition with a daily pill, therapies that seek out
cancer cells and kill them, and the use of a patient's
own immune system to eradicate cancer not someday, but
today.
